Tijjani Reijnders is the latest footballer to pack his bags and head to Saudi Arabia, with the Netherlands midfielder completing a £52m move from Manchester City to Al-Qadsiah. Not a name that trips off the tongue easily, but they've clearly got the cash to splash, and Reijnders is a genuinely good player, so fair play to him for landing that kind of deal.
The thing is, this one feels a little surprising. Reijnders only joined City fairly recently and had looked like a solid piece of Pep Guardiola's midfield puzzle. He's technically gifted, composed on the ball, and the sort of midfielder who makes a team tick without always grabbing the headlines. You'd have thought City would want to hold onto that, especially given how stretched their squad has looked at times this season.
But £52m is £52m, and if the player himself fancied the move, there's not a lot a club can do. Saudi Arabia has become a serious destination now, not just for players winding down their careers, but for blokes who are still very much in their prime. That's the bit that should probably concern European football a little more than it currently does.
From a Manchester City perspective, they'll need to replace that quality in the middle of the park, and that's easier said than done. The transfer market for top midfielders is brutally competitive and eye-wateringly expensive, so the £52m they've banked here might not stretch as far as they'd hope when they go shopping.
For Reijnders, it's a life-changing move financially and probably a decent adventure too. Whether it's the right call for his football development at this stage of his career is another question entirely. He's an international player for the Netherlands and you'd imagine Pep Guardiola's tutelage would've done wonders for him long term. But hey, people make choices, and this is clearly a big one.
