Tottenham are in talks with Brighton over the signing of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, and honestly it is the kind of transfer that makes a lot of sense when you look at where Spurs currently are as a club.
Van Hecke has been one of the more quietly impressive defenders in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons. Brighton have this brilliant knack of finding players who look fairly ordinary on paper and then turning them into proper footballers, and the Dutch centre-back is a good example of that. He is composed on the ball, reads the game well, and looks like someone who actually enjoys defending rather than just tolerating it. That last part is rarer than it should be.
For Spurs, the need at the back is pretty obvious. Their defensive record last season was not exactly one to frame and put on the wall, and Ange Postecoglou needs bodies he can trust at centre-back if he wants the team to build on whatever foundations are slowly being laid. Van Hecke is still only 24, so there is genuine room for improvement too, which means this is not just a short-term fix.
From Brighton's perspective it is a familiar story. They bring a player through, develop him into something special, and then the bigger clubs come knocking. It is almost a business model at this point, and fair play to them for making it work so consistently. Whether they want to sell is another matter, but the fact that talks are happening suggests there is at least some willingness to do a deal if the price is right.
The fee will be the interesting part. Brighton are not a club that lets talent walk out the door cheaply, and they should not have to. Spurs will need to put a proper offer together rather than hoping for a bargain.
As a United fan watching from the outside, this looks like smart business if Spurs can get it over the line. Van Hecke has the profile of a player who could genuinely improve that backline.
