Tottenham have gone and done it. Sandro Tonali is heading to north London in a deal that could reach £100m, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history. That is a lot of money for any footballer, but for Spurs it feels like a proper declaration that they mean business.
Tonali is a genuinely top-level midfielder when he is at his best. The Italian has the engine, the technical quality and the kind of presence in the middle of the park that can change how a team functions entirely. Newcastle fans will be gutted, and fairly so, because he was starting to look like the heartbeat of their side before this move came along.
For Newcastle this is a tough one to take. They built something exciting at St James' Park and Tonali was a big part of that vision. Selling him, even for a fee this size, raises questions about where the club's ambitions actually sit right now. The money is useful, no doubt, but replacing a player of his quality is far easier said than done.
From a Spurs perspective though, this makes a lot of sense. They have been crying out for a midfielder who can control games and do the dirty work at the same time. Tonali offers both. Ange Postecoglou now has a genuine quality option in the engine room, and that should make Tottenham a far more competitive side across the whole season.
The £100m price tag will raise eyebrows, and it should. That is an enormous sum and the pressure on Tonali to justify every penny will be real. He is a very good player but at that price he needs to be consistently brilliant week in, week out in the Premier League. There is no hiding place when a club spends that kind of money.
As a Manchester United fan, seeing Spurs invest like this is both impressive and slightly annoying. This is exactly the kind of decisive transfer activity United should be doing. Still, fair play to Spurs for getting it done.
