Wolves are having themselves a bit of a window, aren't they. The club have confirmed the signing of Kieran Trippier, the former England right-back who spent the last few years at Newcastle after his well-documented spell at Atletico Madrid. And if that wasn't enough, they're apparently deep in talks to bring back Raul Jimenez on a free transfer, which would be quite the reunion for the Molineux faithful.
Trippier is an interesting one. He's not the player he was three or four years ago, let's be honest about that, but he still knows how to deliver a ball and he brings experience that a Wolves side scrapping for relevance in the Premier League genuinely needs. He's been at big clubs, played in big games, and at this stage of his career he probably just wants regular football and a project he can buy into. Wolves could offer him exactly that.
The Jimenez talk is the one that will really get the fans going though. He was absolutely adored at Wolves before his move to Fulham, and the fact he's potentially coming back on a free makes it feel like a proper football story. He's not the unstoppable force he was during those brilliant Nuno Espirito Santo years, but he's a proven Premier League striker and, again, on a free transfer you're not exactly taking a massive gamble.
From a football logic standpoint, Wolves seem to be building a squad that knows what it's doing even if it's not exactly going to trouble the top six. Trippier adds quality and leadership at the back, and Jimenez gives them a recognisable name up front who the system can be built around. It's sensible business rather than flashy business, which probably suits Wolves down to the ground.
Whether these signings are enough to push them clear of a relegation battle or into the top half is another question entirely, but at least they're doing something. Plenty of clubs could learn from that.
