World Cup 2026 Young Players to Watch — The Next Generation Takes the Stage

Every World Cup produces a young player who comes from nowhere and becomes a global star by the time the final whistle goes. In 1998 it was Thierry Henry. In 2006 it was a teenage Messi. In 2018 it was Mbappe. In 2022 it was Pedri. In 2026 the conversation starts and ends with Lamine Yamal — but he is far from the only one.

1

Lamine Yamal

Spain·Barcelona·Age 18

Yamal is 18. He is already the best player at Barcelona, arguably the best in La Liga and in serious contention for the best in the world. He won the Young Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2024. He missed the end of the Barcelona season with a hamstring injury but De la Fuente confirmed he will be fit. If Spain go deep in this tournament Yamal will be the reason.

His first touch, his pace, his ability to beat defenders in confined spaces — none of it looks like it belongs to a teenager. He does not play like someone who needs experience. He plays like someone who has been doing this for twenty years and cannot understand why everyone keeps making such a fuss about it.

Yamal is the frontrunner for Young Player of the Tournament and could genuinely win the overall Golden Ball. He is the frontrunner for everything at this World Cup. Spain are in Group H. Get used to his name.

Endrick

Brazil·Real Madrid (on loan at Lyon)·Age 18

At Real Madrid he had a difficult first season — the minutes were limited and the expectations were suffocating. A loan move to Lyon transformed him. Seven goals and seven assists in half a season in Ligue 1. That is not a player finding his feet. That is a player who has found himself and is ready to show the world.

Ancelotti has recalled him to the Brazil squad and with Vinicius and Raphinha around him he does not need to carry the weight alone. He just needs to take his chances when they come. He is quick, powerful and has a finishing ability that other teenagers simply do not possess.

Endrick does not need to start every game for Brazil to make an impact. He needs fifteen minutes at the right moment, one chance, and the composure to bury it. He has shown he can do exactly that.

Rayan Cherki

France·Manchester City·Age 21

15-plus goal contributions at Manchester City this season. One of the most creative midfielders in Europe. Guardiola trusts him — and when Guardiola trusts a player that age in that environment, you pay attention.

For France he could start games with Mbappe having his minutes managed. That means Cherki gets space, gets time on the ball, gets the chance to be the architect. When he gets space in behind defences he is almost impossible to stop. His dribbling in tight spaces is elite, his passing range is exceptional and his finishing from outside the box is genuinely special.

France are not short of world-class talent. Cherki is the one who could make them look different. He is their secret weapon and the one opposing coaches will stay up all night trying to figure out how to stop.

4

Ayoub Bouaddi

Morocco·Lille·Age 18

One of Ouahbi's most exciting selections. Plays in Ligue 1, quick and direct, mature beyond his years in tight spaces. Most people outside of France and Morocco will not know this name yet. By the time this tournament is over, they will.

Morocco went to the semi-finals in 2022. They are not a team that collapses on the big stage. If they go deep again, Bouaddi will be given the platform and the licence to express himself. And when he gets that licence he makes things happen.

At 18 he is the youngest player in Morocco's squad and one of the youngest at the entire tournament. He plays with a maturity that belies that age. A World Cup stage is exactly the environment where players like Bouaddi announce themselves to the world. Watch him.

5

Antonio Nusa

Norway·RB Leipzig·Age 20

Electric pace, capable of beating defenders at will. Norway with Haaland and Odegaard drawing defenders means Nusa gets space. When he gets space he is the most dangerous wide player in this squad — direct, fast and with the confidence to take risks.

Nusa has been one of the most exciting young wide players in the Bundesliga and at 20 he is already playing with the kind of certainty that takes some players years to develop. He does not hesitate. He sees the gap and he goes.

If Haaland dominates the headlines and Odegaard pulls the strings, Nusa could be the player that nobody sees coming. Norway's most exciting wide player that nobody expected. Keep your eye on the left flank.

6

Warren Zaire-Emery

France·PSG·Age 20

Physical, intelligent, contributes both ways. Already has significant Champions League experience with PSG. Deschamps has given him a key midfield role and the responsibility that comes with it.

Zaire-Emery is not a flashy player. He is the kind of midfielder who wins the ball back when France need it, makes the simple pass when the game needs slowing down and makes the incisive run when the moment calls for it. That maturity at 20 is rare.

France's engine room could be one of the youngest at the tournament. With Zaire-Emery anchoring it alongside Tchouameni and the creative players ahead of them, Deschamps has a midfield that can compete with anything in the world.

7

Arda Guler

Turkey·Real Madrid·Age 20

Has forced his way into Real Madrid's starting lineup with incredible goals. In full flight he is almost unstoppable. Left foot like a wand, ability to drift inside and finish that reminds you of players who come around once in a generation.

Turkey's biggest star and their best chance of making the tournament memorable. In Group D with USA, Australia and Paraguay, there is a realistic path through to the knockouts. If Turkey get there, Guler is the player who will carry them.

At 20 he plays with the arrogance of someone who knows exactly how good he is. At Real Madrid you do not stay in the team unless you are genuinely world class. Guler has stayed. That tells you everything.

8

Giuliano Simeone

Argentina·Atletico Madrid·Age 21

Son of Diego Simeone but this is entirely about what he can do himself. Electric pace, direct running, fearless in one on one situations. Made the Argentina squad ahead of Mastantuono who was left out entirely. Scaloni trusts him.

If Messi draws defenders and Julian Alvarez leads the line, Simeone gets the space to hurt teams on the counter. He is the kind of player who thrives in those conditions — give him space, give him pace, give him a clear run and he will get there before the defender every time.

A World Cup stage is made for players exactly like him. He will not need many chances. Just a couple. And with the quality around him in this Argentina squad, the chances will come.

9

Desire Doue

France·PSG·Age 20

Scored twice against Colombia for France in March. Intelligent off-ball movement that turns half-chances into goals. Does not look dangerous until the pass finds him. Then it is too late.

Doue is not the kind of player who dominates possession statistics or covers the most ground. He is the kind of player who appears in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. That is a skill. It is arguably the most important skill a forward can have.

In a France squad full of talent he might be the one who surprises people the most. Mbappe takes the attention, Cherki gets the space, Zaire-Emery wins the ball. Doue arrives in the penalty area like a ghost and puts it away. France's quiet weapon.

Lennart Karl

Germany·Bayern Munich·Age 18

Youngest Bayern player ever to score in the Champions League. Made his Germany debut in March 2026. Nagelsmann called him up without hesitation. Five goals and four assists in 1200-plus Bundesliga minutes this season. Germany's most exciting teenager.

At Bayern you do not get Champions League minutes at 18 unless you are genuinely exceptional. Karl has those minutes and has delivered in them. Goals, assists, pressing, intelligence — he has everything a modern forward needs.

Germany in Group E should progress comfortably. The knockouts are where players like Karl have the opportunity to become legends. He may not start every game but he will have an impact on this tournament. Germany's wild card. Their most exciting name.
