Golden Boot winner, and now the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. Mbappé finished the 2026 tournament on ten goals, two clear of Messi, having dragged France to the semi-finals before Spain shut them out. Having also top-scored in 2022, he becomes the first player ever to win the Golden Boot at two different World Cups — and the ten goals took his career total to 22, past the 16 Miroslav Klose had held since 2014.

Norway

Seven goals in six matches at his first World Cup, and Norway went further than anyone expected — through the group, past the Round of 32 and the last 16, and out to England in the quarter-finals by a single goal. Haaland scored in every round they played. Had Norway lasted two more games he would have been in the Golden Boot conversation to the end; as it was he finished third, level with Jude Bellingham.

England

Six goals across England's eight matches, and for once the deep run came too: a semi-final against Argentina, then a 6–4 win over France in the third-place play-off. Kane was not the tournament's standout — his own teammate Jude Bellingham finished a goal ahead of him — but the six took his career World Cup total to 14, level with Gerd Müller and fifth on the all-time list.

Brazil

Four goals in five matches, which reads better than Brazil's tournament did. They scored ten and went out early, and Vinicius was the one player who consistently looked like he might change a game on his own. The chances were there; the team around him never settled long enough for the numbers to build.

Spain

A world champion at 18, and not a single goal to show for it. Yamal played the tournament as Spain's creator rather than their finisher — the goals came from Mikel Oyarzabal, who top-scored for the champions with five, and from Pedro Porro and Mikel Merino. It is the clearest illustration of why the Golden Boot and the trophy so rarely go to the same team.

Lionel Messi

Argentina

Everything but the trophy. Eight goals, four assists, and an extra-time winner against England that carried Argentina into the final — where Spain edged it 1–0. Messi still ended the tournament having passed Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup scoring record, finishing his career on 21, second only to Mbappé. A runners-up medal and second place on both all-time lists is a bittersweet way to sign off what he had said would be his final World Cup.

Portugal

41 years old, and three more goals. Nobody expected Ronaldo to win the Golden Boot at 41 and he did not come close, but he did something no player had managed before: he scored at a sixth different World Cup. The tournament also took his career total to 27 matches, second only to Messi, from six tournaments spanning 2006 to 2026.

England

Three goals and three assists, which is close to the shape everyone expected: not the volume scorer, but involved in enough of England's goals to matter across a run to the semi-finals and a third-place finish. Jude Bellingham was the one who turned into the goalscorer, finishing on seven — a goal more than Kane and one of the tournament's genuine surprises.
