Andy Robertson, one of the best left backs of his generation, has completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract. It's a transfer that genuinely surprised a lot of people, and honestly, it's one worth talking about properly.
Let's start with Liverpool. Letting Robertson leave for free is either a sign that they've got serious faith in whoever is coming in next, or it's one of those decisions they'll be quietly regretting in about eighteen months. The lad gave everything for that club, won everything there was to win, and to see him walk out without so much as a transfer fee feels a little rough. Liverpool don't usually let things like this happen by accident though, so presumably they've got a plan. They usually do.
Now, Tottenham. This is actually a really interesting bit of business from Spurs. Robertson is thirty one, so he's not a long term solution, but he is an experienced, battle hardened professional who knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. For a club that has spent years trying to build something meaningful without quite getting over the line, bringing in someone with his medals and mentality is no bad thing at all. He's been to a Champions League final, won the Premier League, won the lot at Liverpool. That kind of experience in your dressing room matters more than people give it credit for.
The question is whether Robertson still has enough in the tank to perform consistently at the level Spurs will need. He's had injury issues in recent seasons and the pace of the Premier League doesn't get any kinder as you get older. If he stays fit though, Spurs have signed a proper footballer on what is essentially a free transfer, and that's hard to argue with.
As a Manchester United fan, watching Liverpool lose a player like Robertson without any compensation is oddly satisfying, but even I have to admit he deserves a good send off from Anfield. Great servant, top professional, and now a very interesting addition to a Tottenham squad with something to prove.
